How do I use div Classes and IDs?

Question by Devin: How do I use div Classes and IDs?
I'm trying to make a HTML and CSS website template, but I don't know how to use div classes and IDs in HTML or CSS. They're really confusing, and I see them more than anything in free templates. How do I use them? For example, How would I make a custom header and navigation menu with them? That's one of the only things I can't figure out in HTML and CSS.
